Multiband theory of quantum-dot quantum wells: Dark excitons, bright excitons, and charge separation in heteronanostructures

چکیده
Electron, hole, and exciton states of multishell CdS/HgS/CdS quantumdot quantum well nanocrystals are determined by use of a multiband theory that includes valence-band mixing, modeled with a 6-band Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian, and nonparabolicity of the conduction band. The multiband theory correctly describes the recently observed dark-exciton ground state and the lowest, optically active, bright-exciton states. Charge separation in pair states is identified. Previous single-band theories could not describe these states or account for charge separation. PACS numbers: 71.35.-y, 73.23.-b, 73.61.-r, 78.20.-e Typeset using REVTEX

Probing long-lived dark excitons in self-assembled quantum dots
Long-lived dark exciton states are formed in self-assembled quantum dots due to the combination of the angular momentum of electrons and holes. The lifetime of dark excitons are determined by spin-flip processes that transfer dark excitons into radiative bright excitons. We employ time-resolved spontaneous emission measurements in a modified local density of optical states to unambiguously reco...
متن کاملFine structure of highly charged excitons in semiconductor quantum dots.
An exciton in a symmetric semiconductor quantum dot has two possible states, one dark and one bright, split in energy by the electron-hole exchange interaction. We demonstrate that for a doubly charged exciton, there are also two states split by the electron-hole exchange, but both states are now bright. We also uncover a fine structure in the emission from the triply charged exciton. By measur...
متن کاملHarmonic-potential traps for indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells
We explain our method of creating an in-plane harmonic potential for indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells, which has been developed for experiments on Bose condensation of excitons in two dimensions, although this method may also be used for trapping a two-dimensional electron gas. The indirect excitons in our coupled quantum wells exhibit a Stark shift of over 60 meV and lifetime of appr...
متن کاملComparative study of the negatively and positively charged excitons in GaAs quantum wells
We compare the photoluminescence spectra of the negatively and positively charged excitons in GaAs quantum wells. We use a structure which enables us to observe both complexes within the same sample. We find that their binding energy and Zeeman splitting are very similar at zero magnetic field, but evolve very differently at high fields. We discuss the implications of these observations on our ...
متن کاملEnhanced exciton absorption and saturation lim it in strained IlnGaAs/lnP quantum wells
A new approach for enhancing the exciton absorption and increasing the saturation limit in quantum wells (QWs), using tensile strain, is proposed. Because of the valence-band mixing in a strained QW, the in-plane hole mass can become very large or negative. This leads to a heavy electron-hole reduced mass (exciton mass), and therefore to a small exciton radius. Exciton absorption is substantial...
